I was looking on some diff. sites related to Mark Wahlberg and came across this excerpt, I would think written by the person who created the site, on the film "Boogie Nights"
and thought I would post it on here and see what you all thought of it. I just saw the movie myself not too long ago- and thought, as always, Mark did an outstanding job in his role in the movie, but otherwise- I dont think it was one of the best films he was in.
I think he was incredibly sexy in it though!!
Anyways, just let me know what you think, agree with, or disagree with on what this person is saying here- thanks!! BTW, heres the site I got it from, It has some good pics of Mark W. on it too!!!

Mark deserves some kind of an oscar for “best possible performance in a worst possible movie” - because he managed to come across so good and nice and lovable in “Boogie Nights” - the most unskillful movie ever. It’s supposed to be about the pornography industry - but the people behind “Boogie Nights” don’t know the first thing about this business - and they don’t know the first thing about making movies either. It tells the story of far too many people, that you absolutely don’t care to hear about - Mark as “John Holmes”, Burt Reynolds as the director, a guy on the set secretly in love with Mark and maybe Mark in love with one of the girls - that should have been it. But then again: a nice, good looking, lovable 17 year old guy has never had the interest of the heterosexual porn business - a huge dick, yes - but not in that way - and the business certainly didn’t end up driving around in a limo picking up GUYS and as if that wasn’t enough, the last scene with a beheaded stand in showing the big dick ruins everything.
If you wanted to get so physical with Mark as in this movie, you had only one chose: showing him jack off for two hours - which is his character’s original profession - and he could have done it marvelously and with natural dignity - but they made another useless chose, that pleases nobody. What a waste!

i dissagree. i think mark did a wonderful job in the movie which of course made the whole movie, if you know what i mean. but as a whole i think that without all of the "organized confusion" in the movie it wouldnt have been as good. i think that it was a bit confusing but that was the fun of it, following along and actually "getting to know" the characters. mark was the character i thought i knew the best which is the result of him being such a marvelous actor. i loved everything about the movie, concider it extremely entertaining, and one of marks best. |

I think the writer of that little spiel is out to lunch
Of course I'm always amazed when people with no experience in the porn industry can tell it like it is!!!
I dont know how well the movie really depicts the porn industry of the 70's ... never was part of it ...BUT the movie isn't about the porn industry either.
The movie was much deeper than ths about human emotion and need, just set in this industry.
The writer may not have enjoyed the movie but I think his/her critique exemplifies how little they can see into a film more than the people who made the movie's inability to make a good film |

| i kinda agree with the article.. the movie wasnt at all what i thought it was gonna be... i mean.. i didn't think about the drugs.. or him gettin his ass kicked... or anything.. i didn't think there was as much nudity as i braced myself for.. but i think Mark did great... the movie itself wasn't the greatest.. i gotta say |

I thought Boogie Nights was an AMAZING film and should have won the Oscar over Titanic. I had no interest in Mark before seeing him act in that film. I think DiCaprio is an excellent character actor, but should be ashamed by Titanic.
Perfect Storm suffered by taking on too much in too little time. Everything, everyone was underdeveloped. And it appeard that the cause of death was the boat's owner due to negligence.
Tim Roth should be ashamed of the wretched spectacle he made of POTA. Great actors, great effects - great director, yet the worst film I have ever seen. I cringed at the Rodney King and Dr. King allusions at the very beginning. Sophomoric at best. Stuff for elementary school children to ponder.
Yes, the make-up was amazing. The flight into the planet was cool. But why did the blonde woman look confused and run away in nearly every shot? And exactly WHEN did Leo and the blonde woman bond enough to merit their passionate goodbye?
And I was so hoping for a stellar performance from Mark, but he was SO UNconvincing as Leo. I wanted him to start to dance to SAVE his character's dignity.
I was in a theater in which HALF the audience left before the end.
I hope Rock Star will be more his style. I really expect a lot from Mark because he can deliver a lot. |

| Interesting remarks from Heather. I too thought that POTA could have been much more than it turned out to be. The ridiculously simplistic dialogs are what turned me off most. Proof that great actors, great effects and a great director still need a decent script to make a good movie. |

Thank you Kathleen; well said. The movie was much larger than revealing the experiences in the porn industry. I thought the film was about a young man who wanted nothing more than to be accepted, mainly by his mother. He was on a mission to prove to his mother that he could be successful - and to himself that he could be an important part of society. But because he lacked a strong family support system, he developed himself as a porn star because ppl thought his large penis was his greatest asset - therefor he believed being a porn star would give him respect. He was a lost soul.
And his mother, what a whack job she was. She was more concerned about him having sex with his girlfriend in his room, than the fact that he didn't go to school. A definite undertone of sexual aggression on her part toward her son.
God, was he so insecure and unsure of himself! Even when he tried cocaine for the first time, it was important to him to be "cool" while snorting.
The ppl around him in the porn industry became his family. He accepted them for who and what they were.
Sadly, I think Eddie wanted to please everyone but himself.

| I think it is an excellent movie on two levels. First, if you look at the underlying meanings and thought behind the characters, you feel for them and realize that they all just wanted acceptance. Secondly, its great because of all those funny lines. You probably have to watch it a few times before you pick up on all of them. It's a lot of fun to watch with friends, especially if you have a couple of drinks(margaritas, maybe?) |
