Alright time for me to put my money where my mouth is. Meaning my musings on starting up intellegent conversations on the films and Mark's acting.

Paul T. Anderson's birthday was Jan 1st, so in celebration (I know I'm late) I thought we'd get going on this film, as it's a favorite of mine as well.

Boogie Nights in my opinion, is one of Mark's strongest films. I know alot of people were originally skeptical about a movie about the porn industry. Me, well it had Mark so who gave a damn, I trusted he wouldn't pick a bad movie, esp when he had been explicitly trying to avoid films wanting to cash in his MM persona.

The big story at the time, was what Burt would be like, since at the time his career was pretty washed up. But as it came closer to release, the praise was leaking like nobody's business. I ended up seeing it fairly early (benefits of living in CA). But it was a packed house nevertheless.

Anyway, as some of you have gathered from my taste in film, I love movies which dig into the psyche of characters. So Boogie Nights was right up my alley. It was filled with flawed characters in an environment that was all about the payoff. In the end we see it destroy, cripple and change the people and business we meet in the first opening sequence. This is one of the many things I love about the movie, we meet the main characters in one sweeping scene at the club.

Some people still think of it as a film about porn. But those people don't realize is it is a film of people who just happen to work in skin flicks. The industry is just background to the characters and their search for love and acceptance.

So please give your thoughts on the film and I'll break down the film in digestable parts (acting, certain scenes, etc) so we can dissect this film.

It was extremely well cast, and I thought Mark and the others really went out on a limb as actors...very brave.

Boggie Nights is my favorite movie, the best.

All characters are the solitary persons who do not know a family's love.
They were in the time and place which the drug overran but also they are the weak persons who cannot live not to borrow the power of drugs.
They are in the pornography industry generally despised.
However they also have dreams, they want love, ask for love, it is common to all human beings.
I think Boogie Nights is powerful movie, in spite of deep story, much humor is in a movie. I love all actors in this movie.
Most charactors are so funny.
My favorite one is Todd! played by Thomas Jane. He is a great actor who seems to be completely another person in every movies he appeared.
And ofcourse Mark is perfect in this movie.
The role of Dirk can be played by only to Mark, I think. Every time I see Boogie Nights, I thank Mark for being an actor.

My first Mark movie. I first saw it April 2001 and I was just amazed with the talent in this movie, Cheadle, Heather, Julianne and of course, Mark. I agree with Kazuko. Every single character was flawed in one way or another and just looking for love and acceptance. I loved the corny lines, the dancing and the clothes!

Agreed, I think Boogie Nights is one of Mark's best movies. I loved the subtle humour in it, it was amusing while everyone was being so very serious about it (in the movie) they just couldnt see the irony of their situation. The scenes with Julianne Moore, the sort of James Bond type movies he makes in the film and the film Amber produces on his life! they crack me up everytime I watch it. How they filmed this without laughing is beyond me! John C. Reilly did an excellent job in this film and its always interesting how he crops up in another of Mark's films Perfect Storm (and Magnolia which was also directed by Paul T. Anderson). It only goes to show how good Mark's acting is with the 'right script' and how important the writers work is in making a good film.
